Melissa Jefferson-Wooden was born and raised in Georgetown, South Carolina, where her journey  on the track began at just five years old. Today, she is a five-time World Champion, Olympic gold and bronze medalist, and the fourth-fastest woman in history.

While Melissa’s accomplishments on the track are extraordinary, it is who she is off the track that defines her most. She proudly calls herself a “Village Kid” because she knows her success is the result of countless people who poured into her life with love, faith, encouragement, mentorship, and unwavering support. Alongside her family, her village helped shape the woman she is today.

Melissa believes everyone deserves to have a village—someone to believe in them, invest in them, and remind them of their potential. That belief became the foundation of The Village Initiative, an organization dedicated to building stronger communities by creating opportunities, fostering meaningful connections, and ensuring that no one has to chase their dreams alone.
